Hypergraph

Builds on SetFamily of sets

Definition

A hypergraph is a pair H=(V,E)H = (V, E) where VV is a set and EE is a family of nonempty subsets of VV. The elements of VV are the vertices, and the members of EE are the hyperedges. Let kk be a positive integer. The hypergraph HH is kk-uniform if each hyperedge has exactly kk elements.

Remarks

Some authors allow repeated hyperedges or the empty hyperedge; others require EE to be a set. A graph is the same thing as a 22-uniform hypergraph without repeated edges. Example: the Fano plane, with the 77 points as vertices and the 77 lines as hyperedges, is a 33-uniform hypergraph, since each line has 33 points. Non-example: V={1,2,3}V = \set{1, 2, 3} with E={{1,2},{1,2,3}}E = \set{\set{1, 2}, \set{1, 2, 3}} is a hypergraph that is not kk-uniform for any kk, because its hyperedges have sizes 22 and 33. Every hypergraph has an incidence matrix, with a row for each vertex and a column for each hyperedge.
