Definition
Let be a nonprincipal ultrafilter on . For sequences and of real numbers, put if . This is an equivalence relation; write for the class of . The set of hyperreal numbers is , with the following structure.
- and .
- if .
- Each real number is identified with the class of the constant sequence .
A hyperreal is infinitesimal if for every real , and infinite if for every real .
Remarks
The operations and the order are well defined, and is an ordered field containing ; it is the ultrapower of by .
Example: is a positive infinitesimal. For a real , the set is cofinite, and a nonprincipal ultrafilter contains every cofinite set, so . Also because every term is positive. So is not Archimedean.
Non-example: if is the principal ultrafilter of the sets containing a fixed , then is an isomorphism onto , and there are no nonzero infinitesimals.
Under the continuum hypothesis, the ordered field does not depend on the choice of , up to isomorphism.
