Hyponormal operator

Definition
Let be a complex Hilbert space and let be a bounded linear operator with adjoint . The operator is hyponormal when is a positive operator, that is,
Remarks
Example: for the unilateral shift on , one has and is the projection onto the vectors with . So is the projection onto the first coordinate, which is positive; is hyponormal.
Non-example: the backward shift gives , the negative of that projection, and for .
Equivalent form: is hyponormal if and only if for all , since . The operator is normal exactly when both and are hyponormal.
