I-adic topology
Builds on Commutative ringIdealModule over a ringTopological space
Definition
Let be a commutative ring, let be an ideal of , and let be an -module. The -adic topology on is the following topology. A subset is open if and only if for every there is with . The -adic topology on is the case .
Remarks
The cosets , for and , form a base of this topology; each of them is open and also closed. Addition on and multiplication are continuous, so becomes a topological ring and a topological module. The topology is Hausdorff if and only if ; then , with the largest such that and , is a metric for it. Example: on with , the sequence tends to , since for all . Non-example: the set is not open in for this topology, since no is contained in . So the -adic topology on is not discrete, unlike the topology that gets from .
