Definition
Let be an algebraic number field with ring of integers , and let be a nonzero ideal of . The norm of is the cardinality of the quotient ring: This number is finite.
Remarks
Example: in , the ideal has the classes of and , so , which equals the norm of the Gaussian integer , namely . Non-example: the zero ideal is excluded, since is infinite. The norm is multiplicative: . For a nonzero , , the absolute value of the field norm. By multiplicativity the norm extends to a group homomorphism from the nonzero fractional ideals of to . For a nonzero prime ideal lying over the prime , , where is the residue degree.
