Definition
Let be a short exact sequence of C*-algebras and -homomorphisms. Assume that is unital; then and are unital. Let be a unitary in . There is a unitary with . For such a , the element has entries in , and the index map is defined by
Remarks
The class does not depend on the choice of , in its class, or the lift , and is a group homomorphism into K0 of . A lift exists because lies in the connected component of in the unitary group, and unitaries in that component lift along surjections. If lifts to a partial isometry , then . Example: for and the image of a Fredholm partial isometry , this gives under . Non-example of a nonzero value: if itself lifts to a unitary , take ; then and . When is not unital, one applies the definition to the unitized sequence .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
