Unitary element
Summary
A unitary element of a unital -algebra is an element whose adjoint is its inverse. In the algebra of bounded operators on a Hilbert space these are the unitary operators, and in a matrix algebra they are the unitary matrices. In a C*-algebra, unitaries have norm and spectrum in the unit circle. Their homotopy classes define the K-group K1.
