Unitary element
Builds on C*-algebra
Definition
Let be a unital -algebra with unit , for example a unital C*-algebra. An element is unitary if The set of unitary elements of is denoted .
Remarks
is a group under multiplication, with . Example: in , the function satisfies for all on the unit circle, so it is unitary. Non-example: the unilateral shift on satisfies but , since kills the first basis vector; so is an isometry and not a unitary. In a C*-algebra, the C* identity gives , and the spectrum of a unitary lies in the unit circle. If is self-adjoint, then is unitary.
