Example

Let SS be the unilateral shift on β„“2(β„•)\ell^2(\N), Sek=ek+1S e_k = e_{k+1}, and let 𝒯\mathcal{T} be the Toeplitz algebra, the C*-algebra generated by SS. Let 𝒦\mathcal{K} be the ideal of compact operators on β„“2(β„•)\ell^2(\N). The Toeplitz extension is the short exact sequence 0→𝒦→𝒯→σC(𝕋)β†’0.0 \to \mathcal{K} \to \mathcal{T} \xrightarrow{\sigma} C(\mathbb{T}) \to 0. Here Οƒ\sigma is the symbol map, determined by Οƒ(S)=z\sigma(S) = z. Check of the ideal: 1βˆ’SSβˆ—1 - S S^* is the rank-one projection onto β„‚e0\C e_0, so 𝒯\mathcal{T} contains a nonzero compact operator. Since 𝒯\mathcal{T} acts irreducibly, it contains all of 𝒦\mathcal{K}. The quotient 𝒯/𝒦\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{K} is commutative, because Sβˆ—Sβˆ’SSβˆ—=1βˆ’SSβˆ—S^* S - S S^* = 1 - S S^* is compact, and it is generated by a unitary with spectrum 𝕋\mathbb{T}, so it is C(𝕋)C(\mathbb{T}).

The index map βˆ‚β€‰β£:K1(C(𝕋))β†’K0(𝒦)\partial \colon K_1(C(\mathbb{T})) \to K_0(\mathcal{K}) sends the generator [z][z] to βˆ’1-1. Indeed SS is a lift of zz and a partial isometry, so βˆ‚[z]=[1βˆ’Sβˆ—S]βˆ’[1βˆ’SSβˆ—]=0βˆ’[e0Β projection]\partial[z] = [1 - S^* S] - [1 - S S^*] = 0 - [e_0 \text{ projection}], which is βˆ’1-1 under K0(𝒦)β‰…β„€K_0(\mathcal{K}) \cong \Z. This is the Fredholm index of SS: dim⁑ker⁑Sβˆ’dim⁑ker⁑Sβˆ—=0βˆ’1\dim \ker S - \dim \ker S^* = 0 - 1. Since βˆ‚\partial is an isomorphism β„€β†’β„€\Z \to \Z, the six-term exact sequence, with K1(𝒦)=0K_1(\mathcal{K}) = 0 and K0(C(𝕋))β‰…β„€K_0(C(\mathbb{T})) \cong \Z, gives K0(𝒯)β‰…β„€,K1(𝒯)=0.K_0(\mathcal{T}) \cong \Z, \qquad K_1(\mathcal{T}) = 0. The class [1][1] generates K0(𝒯)K_0(\mathcal{T}), and the inclusion 𝒦→𝒯\mathcal{K} \to \mathcal{T} is zero on K0K_0.
