Bott periodicity for C*-algebras

Builds on K0 of a C*-algebraK1 of a C*-algebraUnitary elementC*-algebraTopological K-theory

Statement

Let AA be a C*-algebra with unitization A~\widetilde{A}. Let SASA be its suspension, viewed as the C*-algebra of continuous functions f ⁣:𝕋→Af \colon \mathbb{T} \to A with f(1)=0f(1) = 0, where 𝕋\mathbb{T} is the unit circle. Every element of K0(A)K_0(A) has the form [p]βˆ’[s(p)][p] - [s(p)], where pp is a projection in some Mn(A~)M_n(\widetilde{A}). Here s(p)s(p) is the scalar projection obtained by applying the quotient map A~β†’β„‚\widetilde{A} \to \C entrywise. For a projection p∈Mn(A~)p \in M_n(\widetilde{A}), let fpf_p be the loop of unitaries fp(z)=zp+(1nβˆ’p)f_p(z) = z p + (1_n - p), zβˆˆπ•‹z \in \mathbb{T}. Then the formula Ξ²A([p]βˆ’[s(p)])=[fpfs(p)βˆ—]\beta_A\big([p] - [s(p)]\big) = \big[f_p f_{s(p)}^*\big] defines an isomorphism of abelian groups Ξ²A ⁣:K0(A)β†’K1(SA)\beta_A \colon K_0(A) \to K_1(SA), natural in AA, called the Bott map. Together with the natural isomorphism K1(A)β‰…K0(SA)K_1(A) \cong K_0(SA), it gives natural isomorphisms K0(S2A)β‰…K0(A),K1(S2A)β‰…K1(A).K_0(S^2 A) \cong K_0(A), \qquad K_1(S^2 A) \cong K_1(A).

Remarks

The loop fpfs(p)βˆ—f_p f_{s(p)}^* equals 1n1_n at z=1z = 1, so it is a unitary in matrices over the unitization of SASA whose class lies in K1(SA)K_1(SA). One proof, due to Cuntz, uses the Toeplitz extension 0→𝒦→𝒯→C(𝕋)β†’00 \to \mathcal{K} \to \mathcal{T} \to C(\mathbb{T}) \to 0 tensored with AA. Defining Kn(A)=K0(SnA)K_n(A) = K_0(S^n A) for nβ‰₯0n \ge 0, the theorem says Kn+2(A)β‰…Kn(A)K_{n+2}(A) \cong K_n(A), so operator K-theory has only two distinct groups. For A=C(X)A = C(X) with XX compact Hausdorff, it recovers Bott periodicity in topological K-theory. Example: for A=β„‚A = \C it gives K1(C0(ℝ))β‰…K0(β„‚)β‰…β„€K_1(C_0(\R)) \cong K_0(\C) \cong \Z, and then K0(C0(ℝ2))β‰…β„€K_0(C_0(\R^2)) \cong \Z.

Going deeper

For a student

Bott periodicity is what lets the long exact sequence of an extension of C*-algebras close up into the six-term exact sequence. The connecting map K0(B)β†’K1(I)K_0(B) \to K_1(I) of that sequence, the exponential map, is built from the Bott map and the index map. For commutative algebras it contains the classical periodicity K~0(S2X)β‰…K~0(X)\widetilde{K}^0(S^2 X) \cong \widetilde{K}^0(X) for compact spaces XX.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
