Definition
Let be a group, let be a subgroup of finite index , and let be a field. Let be a representation of on a vector space over . Choose representatives of the left cosets of in . For and each there are a unique and a unique with . The induced representation acts on , a direct sum of copies of , by
Remarks
Up to isomorphism, the result does not depend on the choice of the . Equivalently, , using the group algebra. Its degree is . For finite , its character is Example: let , and trivial of degree . Then has dimension , and the formula gives the values at , at transpositions and at -cycles. This is the sum of the trivial and sign characters. Non-example: for in , the index is infinite, so the definition does not apply; the space with the shift action is a different construction, sometimes called compact induction.
