Definition
Let be a second countable locally compact group, and let be a closed subgroup of . Assume that the coset space carries a nonzero -invariant Radon measure . Let be a unitary representation of on a Hilbert space . Let be the space of measurable functions such that:
- for all and ;
- .
Functions that agree almost everywhere are identified. The norm depends only on the coset , because is unitary, so clause 2 makes sense. The induced representation is the representation of on given by .
Remarks
Example: take and trivial on . Clause 1 is empty, , and is a left Haar measure. So is the left regular representation of on .
Example: take , , and for a fixed . Clause 1 asks that , and clause 2 asks that .
Non-example: in the second example, the constant function fails clause 1 when .
When has no invariant measure, one uses a quasi-invariant measure instead. The action then includes the square root of a Radon–Nikodym factor, so that stays unitary. For finite index and finite groups, the result agrees with the induced representation of finite group theory.
