Definition
Let be a locally compact Hausdorff space with a countable base. Let be the Banach space of continuous functions on that vanish at infinity, with the sup norm. Let be a Feller process on with semigroup . The infinitesimal generator of is the linear operator with domain given by where the limit is in the sup norm.
Remarks
Example: for a continuous-time Markov chain on a finite set with rate matrix , one has , so for every , and with the whole space. Example: for Brownian motion on , every twice continuously differentiable with , its first and its second derivatives in lies in , and . Non-example: for Brownian motion on , the function is in but not in , since it is not differentiable at . For , Dynkin's formula says that is a martingale. The semigroup satisfies for , the backward and forward equations.
