Definition
Let be an oriented Riemannian manifold of dimension , and let be its Hodge star, which maps 2-forms to 2-forms. Let be a compact Lie group with Lie algebra , and let be a principal -bundle. Let be a connection on with curvature , a 2-form on with values in the adjoint bundle . The connection is an instanton, or anti-self-dual connection, if
Remarks
Some authors use the opposite orientation and call self-dual connections, with , instantons. Anti-self-dual connections satisfy the Yang–Mills equations , because by the Bianchi identity. On a compact , they minimize the Yang–Mills functional among connections on , the minimum being a topological constant times the absolute value of a characteristic number of .
Example: a flat connection, with , is an instanton. The BPST instanton on for has curvature that is nowhere zero and anti-self-dual for one choice of orientation.
Non-example: on the trivial -bundle over with coordinates , let . Then and , so is not an instanton.
