Definition
Let be an integral domain with field of fractions . The domain is integrally closed if every element of that is integral over lies in . Equivalently, is equal to its integral closure in .
Remarks
Example: is integrally closed. If in lowest terms is a root of with , then , so divides , which forces . The same argument shows that every unique factorisation domain is integrally closed.
Non-example: is not integrally closed. The element of its field of fractions is a root of , but it is not in .
An integrally closed domain is also called a normal domain. A domain is integrally closed if and only if all its localizations at prime ideals are integrally closed.
