Definition
Let be a complex Hilbert space and . Let be a self-adjoint operator on and a bounded self-adjoint operator, and let be the Hamiltonian. Let and , unitary operators for . In the interaction picture, relative to the splitting :
- a state vector at time has, at time , the vector ;
- an observable at time is .
Remarks
Since , one has , so the expectation values are those of the Schrödinger picture. For , the state vector solves Indeed, differentiating gives . Iterating this equation in integral form gives the Dyson series.
Example: if , then is constant and is the observable of the Heisenberg picture. If , then and , the Schrödinger picture.
Non-example: the rule , with in place of , is not an interaction picture. For it gives , and then , the expectation value at time instead of .
