Invariant subspace

Definition

Let FF be a field, let VV be a vector space over FF, and let T ⁣:V→VT \colon V \to V be an endomorphism. A subspace WW of VV is invariant under TT, or TT-invariant, when T(w)∈WT(w) \in W for all w∈Ww \in W.

Remarks

The subspaces 00 and VV, ker⁡T\ker T and im⁡T\im T, and each eigenspace of TT are TT-invariant. A line spanned by v≠0v \ne 0 is TT-invariant if and only if vv is an eigenvector of TT. If V=W1⊕W2V = W_1 \oplus W_2 with both WiW_i invariant, then the matrix of TT in an adapted basis is block diagonal.

Explanations

An invariant subspace is a part of the space that the map never leaves. Vectors inside it stay inside it. We can then study the map on this smaller space alone.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
