statement theorem

Irrationality of square roots of non-squares

Statement

Let nn be a natural number. Then n\sqrt{n} is irrational if and only if nn is not a perfect square.

Remarks

If n=m2n = m^2, then n=m\sqrt{n} = m is rational. The content is the other direction. A proof: if n=a/b\sqrt{n} = a/b, then a2=nb2a^2 = n b^2. By unique factorization, each prime has an even exponent in a2a^2 and in b2b^2, so also in nn. Then nn is a square. For example, 2\sqrt{2}, 3\sqrt{3} and 12\sqrt{12} are irrational. The same argument shows that the kk-th root of nn is irrational unless nn is a kk-th power.

Explanations

L1 human

The square root of a whole number is either a whole number or an irrational number. It is never a fraction such as 32\frac{3}{2}.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 8 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
