Definition
Let be a commutative ring. An ideal of is irreducible if these two conditions hold:
- .
- For all ideals and of with , one has or .
Remarks
Example: every prime ideal is irreducible; if with and , then , a contradiction. Non-example: in fails clause 2, since with both terms strictly larger. In a Noetherian ring, every irreducible ideal is primary. The converse fails: in over a field , the ideal is primary, but it equals . Some authors call an ideal with clause 2 alone meet-irreducible, and then allow .
