Isometry of Riemannian manifolds
Builds on Riemannian manifoldDiffeomorphismDifferential of a smooth map
Definition
Let and be Riemannian manifolds. Let be a diffeomorphism, and let be its differential at . The map is an isometry from to if, for all and all , Equivalently, .
Remarks
Example: let be an orthogonal matrix. The map restricts to a diffeomorphism of the unit sphere with differential . Since , it is an isometry of the round sphere.
Non-example: the map of is a diffeomorphism, but , so it does not preserve the metric.
Let and have the same dimension. A smooth map with , not required to be a diffeomorphism, is a local isometry. The covering map , , is an example. An isometry preserves the Riemannian distance; conversely, by the Myers–Steenrod theorem, a distance-preserving bijection between connected Riemannian manifolds is an isometry in this sense.
