Jacobi symbol
Definition
Let be a positive odd integer with prime factorization , and let be an integer. The Jacobi symbol is where each factor on the right is a Legendre symbol. For , the empty product gives .
Remarks
For a prime , the Jacobi symbol equals the Legendre symbol. If , then is not a quadratic residue modulo . The converse fails: , but is not a square modulo . The symbol is exactly when .
Explanations
L1 human
The Jacobi symbol extends the Legendre symbol from odd primes to all odd positive integers. It multiplies the Legendre symbols for the prime factors of . Its main use is fast computation, because it obeys quadratic reciprocity without the need to factor numbers.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
