Legendre symbol

Definition

Let pp be an odd prime number and let aa be an integer. The Legendre symbol (ap)\left(\frac{a}{p}\right) is the number (ap)={0if p∣a,1if p∤a and a is a quadratic residue modulo p,−1if a is a quadratic nonresidue modulo p.\left(\frac{a}{p}\right) = \begin{cases} 0 & \text{if } p \mid a, \\ 1 & \text{if } p \nmid a \text{ and } a \text{ is a quadratic residue modulo } p, \\ -1 & \text{if } a \text{ is a quadratic nonresidue modulo } p. \end{cases} Here quadratic residue has the meaning of the definition of a quadratic residue.

Remarks

The value depends only on the class of aa modulo pp. For example, (27)=1\left(\frac{2}{7}\right) = 1 because 32≡2(mod7)3^2 \equiv 2 \pmod 7, and (37)=−1\left(\frac{3}{7}\right) = -1. Euler's criterion gives the value as a(p−1)/2a^{(p-1)/2} modulo pp. The law of quadratic reciprocity helps to compute the symbol quickly.

Explanations

L1 human

The Legendre symbol is a short way to say whether aa is a square modulo pp. The value 11 means yes, the value −1-1 means no, and the value 00 means that aa is 00 modulo pp.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
