Statement

Let kk be an algebraically closed field and let PP be a prime ideal of the polynomial ring k[x1,…,xn]k[x_1, \ldots, x_n], generated by f1,…,ftf_1, \ldots, f_t. Let A=k[x1,…,xn]/PA = k[x_1, \ldots, x_n]/P and let dd be its Krull dimension. Let a∈kna \in k^n be a point with f1(a)=⋯=ft(a)=0f_1(a) = \cdots = f_t(a) = 0, and let 𝔪\mathfrak m be the maximal ideal of AA generated by the classes of x1−a1,…,xn−anx_1 - a_1, \ldots, x_n - a_n. Let J(a)J(a) be the t×nt \times n Jacobian matrix (∂fi∂xj(a))\left( \frac{\partial f_i}{\partial x_j}(a) \right) of formal partial derivatives. Then rank⁡J(a)≤n−d\rank J(a) \le n - d, and the localization A𝔪A_{\mathfrak m} is a regular local ring if and only if rank⁡J(a)=n−d\rank J(a) = n - d.

Remarks

Proof idea: let MM be the maximal ideal of aa in k[x1,…,xn]k[x_1, \ldots, x_n]. By Taylor expansion at aa, the image of PP in the nn-dimensional space M/M2M/M^2 is spanned by the linear parts of the fif_i, so it has dimension rank⁡J(a)\rank J(a). Hence dim⁡k𝔪/𝔪2=n−rank⁡J(a)\dim_k \mathfrak m/\mathfrak m^2 = n - \rank J(a). Since AA is a finitely generated domain over kk, the local ring A𝔪A_{\mathfrak m} has dimension dd, and dim⁡k𝔪/𝔪2≥d\dim_k \mathfrak m/\mathfrak m^2 \ge d with equality exactly when A𝔪A_{\mathfrak m} is regular.

Example: for the cusp f=y2−x3f = y^2 - x^3 in k[x,y]k[x, y], one has d=1d = 1 and J=(−3x2,  2y)J = (-3x^2, \; 2y). At a=(0,0)a = (0, 0) the rank is 0≠10 \ne 1, so the local ring at the origin is not regular. At a=(1,1)a = (1, 1) the matrix is (−3,2)(-3, 2), which has rank 11 in every characteristic, so the local ring there is regular.

The hypothesis that the fif_i generate PP is needed, not only that they have the same zeros. For f=x2f = x^2 in k[x]k[x], the zero set is the point 00 and the ring k[x]/(x)k[x]/(x) is a field, hence regular, but J(0)=(0)J(0) = (0) has rank 0≠1−00 \ne 1 - 0.

For a student

The criterion turns the abstract notion of a regular local ring into a computation. It identifies the Zariski cotangent space 𝔪/𝔪2\mathfrak m/\mathfrak m^2 with the cokernel of the transposed Jacobian matrix at the point. The set of singular points is therefore cut out by the minors of size n−dn - d of the Jacobian matrix together with PP, so it is a closed subset. In the language of Kähler differentials, the matrix presents ΩA/k\Omega_{A/k}. The criterion says that AA is smooth over kk near aa exactly when this module is free of rank dd near aa. Over a field that is not perfect, regularity and smoothness differ, and the rank condition then characterizes smoothness rather than regularity.
