Equivalent form: if and only if is a unit of for every . Example: in the maximal ideals are and , so ; for , is or , both units. Non-example: , since ; with the equivalent form, is not a unit of . The nilradical is contained in , since every maximal ideal is prime. The inclusion can be strict: for , the integers localized at a prime , the nilradical is while . is a local ring exactly when is a maximal ideal. Other notations are and . For an ideal , the Jacobson radical of is the intersection of the maximal ideals that contain .
