Jacobson radical of an Artinian ring is nilpotent

Builds on Artinian ringJacobson radicalLeft idealNilpotent idealUnit of a ring

Statement

Let RR be a left Artinian ring, that is, a ring with identity whose left ideals satisfy the descending chain condition. Let J=J(R)J = J(R) be its Jacobson radical, the intersection of all maximal left ideals of RR. Then JJ is a nilpotent ideal: there is an integer n≥1n \ge 1 with Jn=0J^n = 0.

Remarks

The chain J⊇J2⊇J3⊇⋯J \supseteq J^2 \supseteq J^3 \supseteq \cdots becomes constant, say Jn=Jn+1=IJ^n = J^{n+1} = I, and one shows I=0I = 0. If I≠0I \ne 0, choose a left ideal LL minimal among those with IL≠0IL \ne 0, and x∈Lx \in L with Ix≠0Ix \ne 0. Minimality gives L=RxL = Rx and, since I(Ix)=I2x=Ix≠0I(Ix) = I^2 x = Ix \ne 0, also Ix=RxIx = Rx. So x=yxx = yx for some y∈I⊆Jy \in I \subseteq J; as 1−y1 - y is a unit, x=0x = 0, a contradiction. Example: for the ring of upper triangular 2×22 \times 2 matrices over a field, JJ is the set of strictly upper triangular matrices and J2=0J^2 = 0. The Artinian hypothesis is needed: the local ring ℤ(p)\Z_{(p)} is Noetherian, but J=pℤ(p)J = p\Z_{(p)} is not nilpotent, since pn≠0p^n \ne 0 for all nn.

Going deeper

For a student

This is a key step in the structure theory of Artinian rings. With the Artin–Wedderburn theorem, which describes R/JR/J as a product of matrix rings over division rings, it shows that every left Artinian ring is semiprimary. It is also used in the proof of the Hopkins–Levitzki theorem, which says that a left Artinian ring is left Noetherian.
