Jeans length

Builds on Speed of sound

Definition

Let a uniform gas have density ρ0>0\rho_0 > 0 and sound speed cs>0c_s > 0, and let GG be the gravitational constant. The Jeans wavenumber is kJ=4πGρ0/csk_J = \sqrt{4\pi G \rho_0} / c_s, and the Jeans length is λJ=2πkJ=csπGρ0.\lambda_J = \frac{2\pi}{k_J} = c_s \sqrt{\frac{\pi}{G \rho_0}}. The Jeans mass is the mass of a ball of diameter λJ\lambda_J at density ρ0\rho_0, MJ=4π3ρ0(λJ2)3M_J = \frac{4\pi}{3} \rho_0 \left( \frac{\lambda_J}{2} \right)^3.

Remarks

Example: if the density is multiplied by 44 at fixed sound speed, then λJ\lambda_J is halved and MJ=π6ρ0λJ3M_J = \frac{\pi}{6} \rho_0 \lambda_J^3 is also halved, since MJ∝ρ0⋅ρ0−3/2=ρ0−1/2M_J \propto \rho_0 \cdot \rho_0^{-3/2} = \rho_0^{-1/2}. For an isothermal ideal gas cs2=kBT/(μmH)c_s^2 = k_B T / (\mu m_H), where kBk_B is the Boltzmann constant, TT the temperature, μ\mu the mean molecular weight and mHm_H the hydrogen mass, so λJ∝T1/2ρ0−1/2\lambda_J \propto T^{1/2} \rho_0^{-1/2}. Non-example: the radius of a given cloud is not its Jeans length; the cloud is unstable to collapse when its size exceeds λJ\lambda_J. Several conventions differ by factors of order one, for example using the radius instead of the diameter in the Jeans mass.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
