Jordan block

Definition

Let FF be a field, let λ∈F\lambda \in F, and let k≥1k \ge 1. The Jordan block Jk(λ)J_k(\lambda) is the k×kk \times k matrix with entries (Jk(λ))ij={λif j=i,1if j=i+1,0otherwise.(J_k(\lambda))_{ij} = \begin{cases} \lambda & \text{if } j = i, \\ 1 & \text{if } j = i + 1, \\ 0 & \text{otherwise}. \end{cases}

Remarks

For example, J3(λ)=(λ100λ100λ)J_3(\lambda) = \begin{pmatrix} \lambda & 1 & 0 \\ 0 & \lambda & 1 \\ 0 & 0 & \lambda \end{pmatrix}. Jk(λ)−λIkJ_k(\lambda) - \lambda I_k is nilpotent of index kk. Its only eigenvalue is λ\lambda, with algebraic multiplicity kk and geometric multiplicity 11. Some authors put the 11 entries below the diagonal.

Explanations

A Jordan block is the simplest matrix that is not diagonalisable, when its size is at least 22. It has one eigenvalue and only one line of eigenvectors. Every complex matrix is built from such blocks, by the Jordan normal form.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
