Definition

Let π’ž\mathcal{C} be a Waldhausen category. Put S(0)π’ž=π’žS^{(0)} \mathcal{C} = \mathcal{C}, and for nβ‰₯0n \ge 0 let S(n+1)π’žS^{(n+1)} \mathcal{C} be the (n+1)(n+1)-fold simplicial Waldhausen category obtained by applying the S-construction to S(n)π’žS^{(n)} \mathcal{C} in each multidegree. Let wS(n)π’žwS^{(n)} \mathcal{C} be its subcategory of weak equivalences. Since S0π’žS_0 \mathcal{C} is trivial and S1π’žβ‰ƒπ’žS_1 \mathcal{C} \simeq \mathcal{C}, the 11-skeleton in the new simplicial direction gives maps Οƒn ⁣:Σ∣wS(n)π’žβˆ£β†’βˆ£wS(n+1)π’žβˆ£,nβ‰₯0.\sigma_n \colon \Sigma \abs{wS^{(n)} \mathcal{C}} \to \abs{wS^{(n+1)} \mathcal{C}}, \qquad n \ge 0. The K-theory spectrum K(π’ž)K(\mathcal{C}) is the spectrum with nn-th space ∣wS(n)π’žβˆ£\abs{wS^{(n)} \mathcal{C}} and structure maps Οƒn\sigma_n. For a ring RR, K(R)K(R) is the K-theory spectrum of the exact category of finitely generated projective RR-modules, with the isomorphisms as weak equivalences.

Remarks

Waldhausen proved that the adjoint maps ∣wS(n)π’žβˆ£β†’Ξ©βˆ£wS(n+1)π’žβˆ£\abs{wS^{(n)} \mathcal{C}} \to \Omega \abs{wS^{(n+1)} \mathcal{C}} are homotopy equivalences for nβ‰₯1n \ge 1. Hence K(π’ž)K(\mathcal{C}) is an Ξ©\Omega-spectrum above degree 00, its homotopy groups are Ο€nK(π’ž)=Ο€n+1∣wSβˆ™π’žβˆ£=Kn(π’ž)\pi_n K(\mathcal{C}) = \pi_{n+1} \abs{wS_\bullet \mathcal{C}} = K_n(\mathcal{C}) for nβ‰₯0n \ge 0, and Ο€nK(π’ž)=0\pi_n K(\mathcal{C}) = 0 for n<0n < 0.

Example: for a field kk and π’ž\mathcal{C} the finite-dimensional kk-vector spaces with isomorphisms as weak equivalences, Ο€0K(π’ž)=K0(k)β‰…β„€\pi_0 K(\mathcal{C}) = K_0(k) \cong \Z, through the dimension.

Non-example: the map in degree 00, ∣wπ’žβˆ£β†’Ξ©βˆ£wSβˆ™π’žβˆ£\abs{w\mathcal{C}} \to \Omega \abs{wS_\bullet \mathcal{C}}, is in general not a homotopy equivalence. In the example above, Ο€0∣wπ’žβˆ£\pi_0 \abs{w\mathcal{C}} is the set of isomorphism classes of vector spaces, which is β„•\N, while Ο€0\pi_0 of the loop space is β„€\Z. In this example the map is a group completion.

The spectrum K(π’ž)K(\mathcal{C}) is connective. Bass's negative K-groups are captured by a nonconnective variant, built by Thomason for rings and schemes.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
