K2 of a ring

Definition
Let be a ring with identity. Let be the stable Steinberg group of and let be the stable elementary subgroup of . Let be the homomorphism with . The group is the kernel of .
Remarks
The group is the center of ; in particular it is abelian. There is an exact sequence Since is a universal central extension, . It agrees with Quillen's of the plus construction .
Example: , generated by ; this element maps to the identity matrix but is not trivial in .
Example: for a finite field , .
Non-example: an element such as of is not in , since is not the identity matrix.
For a commutative ring and units , there is a Steinberg symbol , and for a field these symbols generate .
