Statement

Let 𝔤\mathfrak{g} be a complex semisimple Lie algebra with Cartan subalgebra 𝔥\mathfrak{h} and positive roots Φ+\Phi^+. Its Weyl group WW is a Coxeter group generated by the simple reflections. Let ρ\rho be half the sum of the positive roots. Let ℓ\ell be the length function of WW, and let ≤\le be the Bruhat order on WW. For y,w∈Wy, w \in W let Py,wP_{y,w} be the Kazhdan–Lusztig polynomial of WW, defined from the Hecke algebra of WW. For w∈Ww \in W let MwM_w be the Verma module of highest weight −wρ−ρ-w\rho - \rho, and let LwL_w be its irreducible quotient. Then for every w∈Ww \in W, the characters satisfy ch⁡Lw=∑y∈W, y≤w(−1)ℓ(w)−ℓ(y)Py,w(1)ch⁡My.\operatorname{ch} L_w = \sum_{y \in W,\ y \le w} (-1)^{\ell(w) - \ell(y)} P_{y,w}(1) \operatorname{ch} M_y.

Remarks

Kazhdan and Lusztig stated the conjecture in 1979. It was proved in 1981, independently by Beilinson and Bernstein and by Brylinski and Kashiwara. Both proofs pass to 𝒟\mathcal{D}-modules on the flag variety and use the Riemann–Hilbert correspondence. There, Py,wP_{y,w} is a generating function for the local intersection cohomology of Schubert varieties, a result of Kazhdan and Lusztig. An equivalent form gives the multiplicities in category O: [Mw:Ly]=Pw0w,w0y(1)[M_w : L_y] = P_{w_0 w, w_0 y}(1), where w0w_0 is the longest element of WW. Example: for 𝔰𝔩2(ℂ)\mathfrak{sl}_2(\C), W={1,s}W = \set{1, s} and P1,s=P1,1=Ps,s=1P_{1,s} = P_{1,1} = P_{s,s} = 1. Here M1=M(−2)M_1 = M(-2) is irreducible and Ms=M(0)M_s = M(0) contains M(−2)M(-2), so ch⁡Ls=ch⁡Ms−ch⁡M1\operatorname{ch} L_s = \operatorname{ch} M_s - \operatorname{ch} M_1, as the formula says.

Going deeper

For a student

For w=w0w = w_0 the highest weight −w0ρ−ρ=0-w_0\rho - \rho = 0 is dominant, all Py,w0P_{y,w_0} equal 11, and the formula gives the trivial character as in the Weyl character formula. The other LwL_w are infinite-dimensional, and for them no earlier formula was known in general. Through translation functors, it gives the characters of all simple modules of integral weight in category 𝒪\mathcal{O}. Its proof was a founding success of geometric representation theory.
