Example

Use geometrized Gaussian units. Fix a mass M>0M > 0, a rotation parameter aa and a charge QQ, and set Σ=r2+a2cos⁡2θ\Sigma = r^2 + a^2\cos^2\theta and Δ=r2−2Mr+a2+Q2\Delta = r^2 - 2Mr + a^2 + Q^2. The Kerr–Newman metric is the metric gg written in Boyer–Lindquist coordinates with these Σ\Sigma and Δ\Delta, together with the electromagnetic potential A=−QrΣ(dt−asin⁡2θ dϕ),F=dA.A = -\frac{Q r}{\Sigma}\left(dt - a\sin^2\theta\, d\phi\right), \qquad F = dA. The pair (g,F)(g, F) is an electrovacuum solution: FF solves the source-free Maxwell equations and gg solves the Einstein equations with the electromagnetic stress–energy of FF.

Checks of the special cases follow. For Q=0Q = 0 the field vanishes and gg is the Kerr metric. For a=0a = 0, Σ=r2\Sigma = r^2, the cross term vanishes, A=−QrdtA = -\frac{Q}{r} dt, and (g,F)(g, F) is the Reissner–Nordström metric. For a=Q=0a = Q = 0 it is the Schwarzschild metric. Since dF=d(dA)=0dF = d(dA) = 0, half of Maxwell's equations hold automatically.

The parameters have a physical meaning: MM is the mass, J=aMJ = aM the angular momentum, QQ the charge, and the magnetic dipole moment is QaQa. If a2+Q2≤M2a^2 + Q^2 \le M^2, the zeros of Δ\Delta are r±=M±M2−a2−Q2r_\pm = M \pm \sqrt{M^2 - a^2 - Q^2}, and r+r_+ is the event horizon. If a2+Q2>M2a^2 + Q^2 > M^2 there is no horizon.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
