Killing horizon
Builds on Lorentzian manifoldKilling vector field
Definition
Let be a Lorentzian manifold with signature , and let be a Killing vector field on . A Killing horizon of is an embedded null hypersurface with two properties. The field is nowhere zero on , and is normal to at each point of .
Since is null, its normal is tangent to , so is a null vector tangent to the generators of . The function vanishes on , so its gradient is normal to . Hence there is a function on , the surface gravity, with
Remarks
Example: in Minkowski space with coordinates and metric , take the boost Killing field . On the null line one has , which is nonzero, null and normal to . Here , whose gradient is after raising the index; on this is , so . Non-example: the same line is not a Killing horizon of the time translation , because is not normal to . The surface gravity is constant along each generator of . It is constant on all of when the horizon is bifurcate. It is also constant when the Einstein equations hold with matter that satisfies the dominant energy condition; this is the zeroth law of black hole mechanics. If is rescaled by a constant , then is multiplied by , so one fixes a normalisation of at infinity.
