Definition
Let be the circle and let be Euclidean space of dimension .
- A knot is a subset that is the image of a continuous injective map .
- Two knots and are equivalent if there is a continuous family of homeomorphisms , , with and . Such a family is an ambient isotopy.
- A knot is tame if it is equivalent to a knot that is a closed polygon with finitely many edges.
Remarks
Equivalence of knots is an equivalence relation, and knot theory studies the equivalence classes. Since is compact, the map is a homeomorphism onto . Most texts consider only tame knots. Every knot that is the image of a smooth embedding is tame, and every tame knot is equivalent to such a knot. Some texts use the -sphere in place of ; this gives the same theory. Often a knot is also oriented, by choosing a direction along .
Example: the circle is a knot, the image of , which is injective on ; it is a tame knot, the unknot. Non-example: the figure-eight curve is not a knot, because it is not injective: and both map to the origin. A wild knot satisfies the first clause but not the third.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
