Kolmogorov's inequality
Builds on Independence of random variablesExpected valueVarianceRandom variable
Statement
Let be independent real random variables with and for each . Let for . Then for every ,
Remarks
Let be the first with . The event depends only on . By independence the cross term vanishes, so . Summing over gives .
The bound has the same right side as Chebyshev's inequality for the single variable , but it controls the whole path . It is a special case of Doob's martingale inequality, since is a martingale.
Example: let the be independent signs, equal to or with probability each. Then the probability that for some is at most . With this is at most .

For a student
The inequality is the key step in the proof that a series of independent centred variables with converges almost surely. That result leads to Kolmogorov's three-series theorem and to the strong law of large numbers for independent variables with suitable finite variances.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
