Krull dimension of a poset

Builds on Partial orderChain

Definition

Let (P,≤)(P, \le) be a partially ordered set. A finite chain x0<x1<⋯<xnx_0 < x_1 < \cdots < x_n in PP has length nn. The Krull dimension dim⁡P\dim P of a nonempty PP is the supremum of the lengths of the finite chains in PP, an element of ℕ∪{∞}\N \cup \set{\infty}. The empty poset has Krull dimension −∞-\infty by convention; some authors use −1-1 instead.

Remarks

Example: the power set of {1,…,n}\set{1, \ldots, n} ordered by inclusion has Krull dimension nn. The chain ∅⊂{1}⊂⋯⊂{1,…,n}\varnothing \subset \set{1} \subset \cdots \subset \set{1, \ldots, n} has length nn, and a longer chain would need two subsets of the same size. Example: ℕ\N with its usual order has Krull dimension ∞\infty. The dimension can be infinite even when every chain is finite: the disjoint union of chains of lengths 1,2,3,…1, 2, 3, \ldots has no infinite chain but has dimension ∞\infty. For a commutative ring RR, the Krull dimension of the ring is the Krull dimension of its set of prime ideals ordered by inclusion.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
