Definition
Let be an integral domain with field of fractions . A discrete valuation of is a surjective map with and whenever ; its ring is , a discrete valuation ring. is a Krull domain if there is a family of discrete valuations of such that:
- ;
- for every , for only finitely many .
Remarks
Example: is a Krull domain, with the -adic valuations of for all primes . A rational number lies in exactly when for all , and a nonzero rational number involves only finitely many primes. More generally every unique factorisation domain and every Noetherian integrally closed domain is a Krull domain. Non-example: is not a Krull domain. An intersection of valuation rings is integrally closed, but is a root of and does not lie in . So clause 1 fails for every family. The family can be chosen as the valuations of the localizations at the height-one primes of . By the Mori–Nagata theorem, the integral closure of a Noetherian domain is a Krull domain.
