Statement

Let RR be a commutative Noetherian ring, let II be an ideal of RR, and let MM be a finitely generated RR-module. Then ⋂n≥0InM={x∈M:(1+a)x=0 for some a∈I}.\bigcap_{n \ge 0} I^n M = \set{x \in M : (1 + a) x = 0 \text{ for some } a \in I}. In particular:

  1. if II is contained in the Jacobson radical of RR, then ⋂nInM=0\bigcap_{n} I^n M = 0; this applies when RR is a local ring and I≠RI \neq R;
  2. if RR is an integral domain and I≠RI \neq R, then ⋂nIn=0\bigcap_{n} I^n = 0.

Remarks

Let N=⋂nInMN = \bigcap_n I^n M. By the Artin–Rees lemma, N=InM∩N=In−k(IkM∩N)⊆INN = I^n M \cap N = I^{n-k}(I^k M \cap N) \subseteq I N for n>kn > k, so N=INN = IN. As NN is finitely generated, the determinant trick gives a∈Ia \in I with (1+a)N=0(1 + a) N = 0. Conversely, if (1+a)x=0(1 + a) x = 0 then x=−ax=(−a)nx∈InMx = -a x = (-a)^n x \in I^n M for every nn. Example: in R=ℤ/6ℤR = \Z/6\Z with I=(2)I = (2), one has I2=II^2 = I, so the intersection is I={0,2,4}I = \set{0, 2, 4}, and indeed 3=1+23 = 1 + 2 kills 22 and 44. The Noetherian hypothesis is needed. In the local ring of germs at 00 of smooth functions ℝ→ℝ\R \to \R, consider the germ of e−1/x2e^{-1/x^2}, extended by 00 at 00. It is nonzero, but it lies in every power of the maximal ideal.

Going deeper

For a student

Clause 1 shows that a Noetherian local ring embeds into its 𝔪\mathfrak m-adic completion. It also shows that two elements of a Noetherian local ring are equal if they agree modulo every power of 𝔪\mathfrak m. This is the basis of many arguments by successive approximation.
