Builds on Family of setsBinomial coefficient
Statement
Let be an integer. For a family of -element sets, the shadow is the family of all -element sets that are contained in some member of . Every positive integer can be written in exactly one way as with integers . If is a family of sets of size , then
Remarks
The bound is attained by the first sets of size of positive integers in the colexicographic order. In this order, comes before when the largest element of lies in . The proof shows, with compression operators, that one may assume is an initial segment of this order, and then counts.
Example: let and , so and the bound is . A graph with edges, seen as a family of -sets, covers at least vertices, and the triangle covers exactly .
A simpler form due to Lovász: if for a real number , then , where .

For a student
The theorem characterises the possible -vectors of simplicial complexes, since the faces of a complex form a family closed under taking shadows. It implies the Erdős–Ko–Rado theorem. Its numerical form, through the -binomial representation of , reappears in Macaulay's theorem on Hilbert functions and in the g-theorem for polytopes.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
