Combinatorics Extremal combinatorics Theorem

Erdős–Ko–Rado theorem

Builds on Family of setsBinomial coefficient

Statement

Let nn and kk be positive integers with n≥2kn \ge 2k. Let ℱ\mathcal{F} be a family of kk-element subsets of {1,…,n}\set{1, \ldots, n} that is intersecting: A∩B≠∅A \cap B \ne \emptyset for all A,B∈ℱA, B \in \mathcal{F}. Then ∣ℱ∣≤(n−1k−1).|\mathcal{F}| \le \binom{n - 1}{k - 1}.

Remarks

Katona's proof places 1,…,n1, \ldots, n around a circle in a random order. An intersecting family contains at most kk of the nn arcs of kk consecutive points, when n≥2kn \ge 2k. Each kk-set is such an arc with probability n/(nk)n / \binom{n}{k}, so averaging gives ∣ℱ∣⋅n/(nk)≤k|\mathcal{F}| \cdot n / \binom{n}{k} \le k, that is, ∣ℱ∣≤kn(nk)=(n−1k−1)|\mathcal{F}| \le \frac{k}{n} \binom{n}{k} = \binom{n-1}{k-1}.

Example: the star of all kk-sets that contain the element 11 is intersecting and has exactly (n−1k−1)\binom{n-1}{k-1} members. For n>2kn > 2k the stars are the only families that attain the bound. For n=2kn = 2k there are others, for example one set from each complementary pair. The hypothesis n≥2kn \ge 2k is necessary: if k<n<2kk < n < 2k, any two kk-subsets intersect, and there are (nk)=nk(n−1k−1)>(n−1k−1)\binom{n}{k} = \frac{n}{k} \binom{n-1}{k-1} > \binom{n-1}{k-1} of them.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is a basic result of extremal set theory, with many extensions: to tt-intersecting families, to vector spaces, to permutations, and to other structures. Its circle proof is an averaging argument of the same kind as the proof of the LYM inequality. The Kruskal–Katona theorem gives another proof. In graph language it gives the independence number of the Kneser graph.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
