Statement

Let n≥1n \ge 1 be an integer and let ℱ\mathcal{F} be a family of subsets of [n]={1,…,n}[n] = \set{1, \ldots, n}. Suppose that ℱ\mathcal{F} is an antichain in the power set ordered by inclusion: no member of ℱ\mathcal{F} is a proper subset of another. Then ∑A∈ℱ1(n∣A∣)≤1.\sum_{A \in \mathcal{F}} \frac{1}{\binom{n}{|A|}} \le 1.

Remarks

A maximal chain ∅⊂{a1}⊂{a1,a2}⊂⋯⊂[n]\emptyset \subset \set{a_1} \subset \set{a_1, a_2} \subset \cdots \subset [n] corresponds to an ordering a1,…,ana_1, \ldots, a_n of [n][n], so there are n!n! of them. A set AA with ∣A∣=k|A| = k lies on exactly k!(n−k)!k! (n - k)! maximal chains. A chain meets an antichain at most once, so ∑A∈ℱ∣A∣!(n−∣A∣)!≤n!\sum_{A \in \mathcal{F}} |A|! (n - |A|)! \le n!, and division by n!n! gives the inequality.

Since (nk)≤(n⌊n/2⌋)\binom{n}{k} \le \binom{n}{\floor{n/2}} for all kk, the inequality gives ∣ℱ∣≤(n⌊n/2⌋)|\mathcal{F}| \le \binom{n}{\floor{n/2}}, which is Sperner's theorem. Equality holds for the family of all kk-subsets of [n][n], for any kk. Without the antichain hypothesis the sum can exceed 11: for ℱ={∅,[n]}\mathcal{F} = \set{\emptyset, [n]} it equals 22.

For a student

The LYM inequality is the strong form of Sperner's theorem, and its chain-counting proof is a model double-counting argument. It extends to posets with a suitable chain structure, called LYM posets. It is also used, through the same idea of averaging over orderings, in Katona's proof of the Erdős–Ko–Rado theorem. The Kruskal–Katona theorem gives the exact minimum size of the shadow of a family of sets of one size.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
