Lagrange interpolation
Definition
Let be a field, let , let be pairwise distinct, and let . For , the Lagrange basis polynomial is The Lagrange interpolation polynomial of the data is
Remarks
Each has degree , with and for . So has degree at most and for all : it is the unique interpolation polynomial of the data. Example: for the data , , , the basis polynomials are , and . Then , and indeed , , . Non-example: if two nodes coincide, with , the denominator is and the formula has no meaning.
