Problem

Consider elastic columns of given length LL, given volume VV and given material. Among them, find the distribution of cross-section along the axis that makes the buckling load as large as possible. Let A(x)A(x) be the cross-section area at x∈[0,L]x \in [0, L]. In the classical form the cross-sections are geometrically similar, so the second moment of area is I(x)=αA(x)2I(x) = \alpha A(x)^2 for a constant α>0\alpha > 0. For pinned ends the buckling load is the smallest eigenvalue PP of EαA(x)2w′′(x)+Pw(x)=0,w(0)=w(L)=0,E \alpha A(x)^2 w''(x) + P w(x) = 0, \qquad w(0) = w(L) = 0, and the problem is to maximize it over A≥0A \ge 0 with ∫0LA(x) dx=V\int_0^L A(x) \, dx = V.

Remarks

For a uniform column the answer is Euler's critical load, P=π2EαA2/L2P = \pi^2 E \alpha A^2 / L^2 with A=V/LA = V/L. Lagrange studied the problem in the 1770s and concluded that the uniform cylinder is the strongest column, which is not correct. T. Clausen found the optimal shape for pinned ends in 1851, and J. B. Keller rederived it in 1960 by the calculus of variations. The optimal column is thicker in the middle and tapers towards the ends. Its buckling load is 4/34/3 times that of the uniform column of the same volume. For clamped ends the optimal design has a double smallest eigenvalue, which makes the problem harder; this case was studied later by several authors.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
