Definition
An elasticity tensor is isotropic if for every orthogonal matrix , with summation over repeated indices. Every isotropic elasticity tensor has the form for unique real numbers and , where is the Kronecker delta. These numbers are the Lamé parameters of : is the first Lamé parameter and is the second. Equivalently, the stress produced by a strain is the stress .
Remarks
Example: with and and the pure shear strain , the trace is and ; so is the ratio of shear stress to engineering shear strain .
Non-example: a cubic crystal has an elasticity tensor with three independent constants, and in general it is not of the form above, so it has no Lamé parameters.
Positivity of the elasticity tensor is equivalent to and . In terms of Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio , and .
