Definition
Let be a bounded open set filled with a liquid crystal at temperature . A Q-tensor is a real symmetric matrix of size with trace . The Landau–de Gennes bulk energy density is where with constants and a temperature . The Landau–de Gennes energy of a field is with an elastic constant and .
Remarks
A Q-tensor is uniaxial if two eigenvalues coincide; then for a unit vector and a scalar order parameter . Example: for uniaxial the eigenvalues are , so and , and The isotropic state and a nematic state have equal energy when the bracket in has a double root, that is, at , with . So jumps from to : the isotropic–nematic transition is first order, at a temperature above . Non-example: the matrix is symmetric but has trace , so it is not a Q-tensor. For uniaxial with constant , the elastic term reduces to the one-constant Oseen–Frank energy with .
