Lawvere theory

Definition
Let be the category whose objects are the natural numbers . Each is viewed as the set , and the morphisms are all functions between these sets. A Lawvere theory is a small category with finite products, together with a functor that is bijective on objects and preserves finite products. A model of is a functor that preserves finite products.
Remarks
In , the object is the product of copies of , with projections given by the inclusions . So in every object is a power of the object . A model is determined by the set and the maps given by the morphisms .
Example: for a variety with free algebras on generators, let be the set of homomorphisms , composed in the opposite order. This is a Lawvere theory. Here is the set of -ary terms modulo the identities of . The object is the product of copies of because is the coproduct of copies of in . Its category of models is equivalent to .
Non-example: the category itself, not its opposite, has finite products, given by cartesian products, so the product of and is . It is not a Lawvere theory, since in a Lawvere theory every object is a power of one object . Here and are not both powers of the same natural number.
