Definition
Let be a non-decreasing function that is right-continuous at every point, that is, a Stieltjes function. The Lebesgue–Stieltjes measure of is the unique measure on the Borel sigma-algebra of such that
Remarks
Existence comes from the Carathéodory extension theorem applied to the premeasure on half-open intervals; right-continuity is what makes it countably additive. Uniqueness holds because is a countable union of intervals of finite measure. Many authors also call the completion of the Lebesgue–Stieltjes measure. Example: gives Lebesgue measure on the Borel sets. Example: for , which is right-continuous, is the Dirac measure at , and in general. Non-example: is not non-decreasing, and the formula would give the negative value . Two functions and give the same measure if and only if is constant. The notation is common, as in .
