Example

Use units where the gravitational constant and the speed of light equal 11, and take the cosmological constant to be 00. Let E(r)>−12E(r) > -\frac12 and M(r)M(r) be smooth functions, and let R(t,r)>0R(t, r) > 0 be a function with ∂rR>0\partial_r R > 0. In coordinates (t,r,θ,ϕ)(t, r, \theta, \phi), the Lemaître–Tolman metric is g=−dt2+(∂rR)21+2E(r) dr2+R(t,r)2(dθ2+sin⁡2θ dϕ2).g = -dt^2 + \frac{(\partial_r R)^2}{1 + 2E(r)}\, dr^2 + R(t, r)^2\left(d\theta^2 + \sin^2\theta\, d\phi^2\right). It solves the Einstein field equations with pressureless dust Tab=ρ uaubT_{ab} = \rho\, u_a u_b, u=∂tu = \partial_t, exactly when (∂tR)2=2M(r)R+2E(r),4πρ=M′(r)R2 ∂rR.\left(\partial_t R\right)^2 = \frac{2M(r)}{R} + 2E(r), \qquad 4\pi\rho = \frac{M'(r)}{R^2\, \partial_r R}. Each shell r=constr = \text{const} of dust moves on its own. Here RR is its areal radius, M(r)M(r) the mass inside it, and E(r)E(r) its energy per unit mass.

Checks of special cases: if M′=0M' = 0, the density vanishes and the metric is the Schwarzschild metric of mass MM in coordinates of freely falling observers. If R(t,r)=a(t) rR(t, r) = a(t)\, r, M(r)=M0r3M(r) = M_0 r^3 and E(r)=−k2r2E(r) = -\frac{k}{2} r^2 with constants M0M_0 and kk, the metric becomes −dt2+a2(dr21−kr2+r2dΩ2)-dt^2 + a^2\left(\frac{dr^2}{1 - kr^2} + r^2 d\Omega^2\right), the dust Friedmann–Lemaître–Robertson–Walker metric. The first equation then becomes a˙2=2M0/a−k\dot a^2 = 2M_0/a - k, and the second gives ρ=3M0/(4πa3)\rho = 3M_0/(4\pi a^3), so a˙2=8π3ρa2−k\dot a^2 = \frac{8\pi}{3}\rho a^2 - k, the Friedmann equation for dust.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
