Definition
Let be a series with partial sums . Let be a sequence of nonzero numbers, the remainder estimates, let , and let be an integer. The Levin transformation is defined when the denominator is not . The choice gives Levin's -transformation, and gives Levin's -transformation. Transformations of the same construction with other choices of remainder estimates or of the factors are called Levin-type transformations.
Remarks
The formula is exact for the model sequences Indeed, is then a polynomial in of degree at most , so its -th difference vanishes. Solving this for gives . Example: for with , one has , so the -transformation with returns for every . Non-example: if some term is , the remainder estimate is and the -transformation is not defined there.
