Series acceleration

Definition
A sequence transformation assigns to a sequence of real or complex numbers a new sequence . Each depends on finitely many terms of . Let converge to , with for all large . The transformation accelerates the convergence of if converges to and Series acceleration means applying such a transformation to the sequence of partial sums of a convergent series.
Remarks
Example: for with limit , the transformation gives , so it accelerates this sequence. Non-example: the shift gives for the same sequence. The error is halved, but the ratio does not tend to , so this is not acceleration in the sense above. A given transformation accelerates some sequences and not others.
