Definition
Let be or , and let be a vector space over . Suppose , where are linear subspaces. Suppose each carries a topology making it a Fréchet space, and each inclusion is continuous. The inductive limit topology on is the locally convex topology defined as follows. A set is a neighbourhood of if it contains a convex balanced set with the following property. For every , the set is a neighbourhood of in . A locally convex space is an LF-space if it is Hausdorff and arises in this way.
Remarks
The inductive limit topology is the finest locally convex topology on for which all inclusions are continuous. Many authors require the limit to be strict: each carries the topology induced by . Consider a strict limit with each closed in . Then is Hausdorff and complete, and it induces the given topology on each . A set is bounded in if and only if it lies in some and is bounded there. Example: let be open, and let be compact sets with union , each inside the interior of the next. Let be the Fréchet space of smooth functions supported in . Then is a strict LF-space. Non-example: the space of finitely supported sequences with the sup norm is not an LF-space, since every LF-space is barrelled and this space is not.
